Leland Lamar Sparkman was born in Grace, Mississippi on March 12, 1910. His parents were Leland “Lee” Sparkman(1888-1961) and Sallie Mae Woener(1894-1960).
Lee and Sallie Mae married eight years after having Leland; they married on August 3, 1918, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Lee worked as a farmer on his own land in Shuqualak "Sugar Lock" , in the county on Noxubee, where they raised their only child Leland or as they called him differentiate, Lamar.
His Father Lee was born in Shuqualak, Mississippi on January 25, 1888, and worked as a farmer almost all of his life. He did enlist for WWI in 1917, even after his child's birth. After his son's death, he and Sallie Mae mourned the loss of their only son. Lee continued to work until he passed the 1st September, 1961 and was buried in the Shuqualak cemetery.
His Mother Sallie Mae Woener was born December 29, 1894. She and Lee are both from Shuqualak. As the wife of Lee, she too lived on their farm in Shuqualak, most likely helping around the farm and providing care to little Lamar. She passed before her husband on May 20, 1960, and was buried besides him in Shuqualak cemetery.
Leland grew up on his family farm in Shuqualak and attended Shuqualak high school for three years. He helped around the farm as the assistant manager. In his draft card, he was noted as “Semiskilled chauffeurs and drivers, bus, taxi, truck, and tractor” and was noted as being an employee of one ‘BJ Tonner’ It can be assumed that he worked as a driver or chauffeur under this BJ Tonner, gaining some helpful driving skills along the way. After some time of living on his own back in his birth town of Grace (his address is noted as being in Grace in his draft card) he decided to do something drastic.
